Apple Announces Retirement of Bob Mansfield, Senior VP of Hardware Engineering

Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering Bob Mansfield is retiring, according to an Apple press release. He joined Apple in 1999. He has led Mac hardware engineering since 2005, along with iPhone, iPod, and iPad engineering since 2010.

Apple� today announced that Bob Mansfield, Apple?s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will retire and the role will be transitioned to Dan Riccio, Apple?s vice president of iPad Hardware Engineering, over several months. The entire hardware engineering team will continue to report to Mansfield until his departure.

?Bob has been an instrumental part of our executive team, leading the hardware engineering organization and overseeing the team that has delivered dozens of breakthrough products over the years,? said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?We are very sad to have him leave and hope he enjoys every day of his retirement.?

Mansfield has been instrumental in Apple's success in recent years, overseeing the development of the very successful MacBook Air notebooks, as well as recent iPhone and iPad designs. With rumors of an iPhone redesign coming this fall, it's possible that Mansfield wanted to stay with Apple through the introduction of that product.

He has sold off more than $70 million in Apple stock and options in the past few years.

Dan Riccio, the executive taking over Mansfield's responsibilities, has been with Apple since 1998. He was vice president of product design for 12 years before taking over the iPad division in 2010. Apple's press release says Riccio "has been a key contributor to most of Apple?s hardware over his career."

In a separate announcement made today in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple reported that Corporate Controller and Principal Accounting Office Betsy Rafael will also be retiring, effective October 19.

Fixing basic HTTP authentication in python tweetstream

Earlier today it seems something changed in how Twitter's Streaming API handles basic HTTP authentication. This left a number of developers scrambling to fix their apps.

Fortunately, the fix to TweetStream, which is a a simple Python module that provies access to the streaming API, was very straightforward. Unfortunately, the library is not actively maintained and was also missing the recent changes to the streaming endpoints. If you are looking for a working version, I forked the project and fixed the endpoints and authentication bug and made a new version available on github.

Apple Files Request to Obtain iPad3.com Domain [iOS Blog]

As noted by Domain Name Wire, Apple has filed a claim with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) seeking to gain control of the iPad3.com domain. The move comes even though the company opted to simply refer to the third-generation iPad as "the new iPad", but it seems likely that iPad3.com may still be a popular destination for those attempting to find out more about the device.

iPad3.com was registered in January 2010 and is currently owned by a company called Global Access in Isle of Man. Global Access is no stranger to cybersquatting complaints, having lost challenges by big companies such as AllState, AOL, an MasterCard.

The domain name is currently parked. Its traffic is rotated to various domain parking services with Above.com.

The report notes that Apple still does not own the basic iPad.com domain name, but while the site has hosted a "coming soon" notice for quite some time it appears that the site's current owner is not simply cybersquatting on the domain.

Last month, Apple filed a complaint seeking to gain control of iPhone5.com, taking possession of the domain a few weeks later before WIPO was required to render a decision on the dispute. As shown with Apple's efforts to obtain iPad3.com, its work to control iPhone5.com may not serve as evidence that the company is planning to call its next-generation device the "iPhone 5" and may simply be an effort to control its brand.

Google Announces $199 Nexus 7 Tablet, $299 Nexus Q Media Streamer

At its Google I/O conference today, Google unveiled several new products intended to compete in the tablet and home entertainment markets, squarely targeting Apple's iPad and its rumored push into the living room for which the Apple TV has served as a foothold.


Google's presentation began with a spotlight on Android, noting that it is now activating more than one million Android devices per day and showing off Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean". The new version of the operating system offers a number of enhancements, including a faster interface, cleaner home screen design with resizable widgets, offline voice dictation, a new camera app, enhanced notifications, Siri-like voice search, and more.

A new "Google Now" feature keeps tracks of users' locations to automatically offer information relevant to their real-life experiences, whether it be information on subway schedules, menu recommendations at a restaurant, or other situations.


As for Google's hardware announcements, they leaked out ahead of time through the company's own Google Play site, which confirmed that the Google Nexus 7 will be an ASUS-manufactured tablet priced at $199 for 8 GB of storage and $249 for 16 GB of storage. The device's 7-inch IPS display offers 1280x800 pixels and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera is included. The Nexus 7 will use a quad-core Tegra 3 processor and incorporate Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC connectivity.


On the home entertainment front, rumors from earlier this year are coming to fruition today with the introduction of the Google Nexus Q, a spherical $299 "social streaming media player". The Nexus Q will allow users to wirelessly stream music, video, and YouTube content to their home entertainment systems. Also serving as an amplifier, the Nexus Q can be connected directly to speaker systems such as Google's new $399 Triad speakers.

Google's keynote is still ongoing, and we will update this post with additional information as it is released.
